Okay, go on. This led me on a rabbit hunt through the internet to understand where that number the 37 percent came from. This is also where the concept of e started to go a little over my head and I stopped Googling. I did enjoy this simplified example of the setup, though, which is also called the Secretary Problem , from Scientific American in Ask someone to take as many slips of paper as he pleases, and on each slip write a different positive number.
The numbers may range from small fractions of 1 to a number the size of a googol 1 followed by a hundred 0s or even larger. These slips are turned face down and shuffled over the top of a table. One at a time you turn the slips face up. The aim is to stop turning when you come to the number that you guess to be the largest of the series.
You cannot go back and pick a previously turned slip. If you turn over all the slips, then of course you must pick the last one turned.

Two things: the somewhat random-looking picture above is from The Moon Is Blue, a film that’s the first known reference to the ‘dating rule’ discussed here. Secondly, I don’t make any judgement about the validity of the ‘dating rule’ – you might find it a useful rule of thumb or a ludicrous restriction; I find it a nice thing to do some algebra on.
There is a so-called rule about dating: the youngest age you are supposed to date is half your age plus seven. Why would we want to do this? Well, it means we can work out some other implications of the rule. For instance, you might want to know what the oldest age you could reasonably date would be. The rule doesn’t say anything about that, but it does also apply to the other person.

Unless the law provides otherwise, if a money judgment in a civil case is affirmed, whatever interest is allowed by law is payable from the date when the district court’s judgment was entered. If the court modifies or reverses a judgment with a direction that a money judgment be entered in the district court, the mandate must contain instructions about the allowance of interest.
The first sentence makes it clear that if a money judgment is affirmed in the court of appeals, the interest which attaches to money judgments by force of law see 28 U. There has been some confusion on this point. See Blair v. Durham , F. In reversing or modifying the judgment of the district court, the court of appeals may direct the entry of a money judgment, as, for example, when the court of appeals reverses a judgment notwithstanding the verdict and directs entry of judgment on the verdict.
In such a case the question may arise as to whether interest is to run from the date of entry of the judgment directed by the court of appeals or from the date on which the judgment would have been entered in the district court except for the erroneous ruling corrected on appeal. In Briggs v. Pennsylvania R. The second sentence of the proposed rule is a reminder to the court, the clerk and counsel of the Briggs rule.
Since the rule directs that the matter of interest be disposed of by the mandate, in cases where interest is simply overlooked, a party who conceives himself entitled to interest from a date other than the date of entry of judgment in accordance with the mandate should be entitled to seek recall of the mandate for determination of the question.
